Summer Cup Review

Newcastle Nighthawks Summer Cup

The Newcastle Nighthawks embarked on a five-hour journey south to the national baseball centre of Farnham Park to compete in the BBF Summer Cup 2024.

Entered in the Silver (AA) level, the Nighthawks, who were missing several of their usual first-team players, found themselves in a challenging group with the London Mets, Essex Baseball Club, and the Great Britain U15 team. The other half of the Silver tier included Birmingham, Guildford, Scotland, and the GB National Women’s side.

Game 1: Newcastle Nighthawks vs. London Mets

On Saturday, the Nighthawks faced off against the London Mets in their first game. With Zachary Lau on the mound, the team had a strong start in the first two innings. However, defensive errors in the 3rd and 5th innings allowed the Mets to take the lead, ultimately winning the game 9-6.

Game 2: Newcastle Nighthawks vs. Essex Baseball Club

Later on Saturday afternoon, the Nighthawks took to the diamond again, this time against the Essex Baseball Club. Despite a shaky first inning and limited pitching options, shortstop Martinez stepped in for the second inning and helped stabilize the team. The Nighthawks took full advantage of the maximum 5 runs per inning rule in both the second and third innings. Center fielder Claudio Dallanaj pitched the final inning, but with two runs allowed and only one out remaining, Paul Brown, despite an injury, closed the game. The Nighthawks emerged victorious, winning 11-8, bolstered by Ryan Dickson's three RBIs.

Game 3: Newcastle Nighthawks vs. Great Britain U15

Sunday morning's early game at 8:30 am saw the Nighthawks competing against the Great Britain U15 team, who were preparing for an upcoming European tournament. Zachary Lau, the only fully fit pitcher, took on pitching duties once more. Despite scoring 6 runs, including 2 RBIs from catcher Nik Home, the Nighthawks couldn't match the GB youngsters, who won 10-6.

5th Place Decider: Newcastle Nighthawks vs. Guildford

With the divisional games concluded, the Nighthawks faced Guildford in the 5th place decider. Center fielder Claudio Dallanaj was called upon again to pitch, giving up 5 runs over the 3-inning game. However, a strong offensive performance, scoring 10 runs over two innings and featuring multiple RBIs from Luke Ellett, Alex Winter, and Dallanaj, secured a 10-5 victory for the Nighthawks.

The overall winners of the Silver level were Birmingham, who narrowly defeated the London Mets 9-8 in a closely contested final.

Despite being short on strength and pitching depth, the Nighthawks had an enjoyable and competitive weekend away from the North East. Their efforts and team spirit were commendable throughout the BBF Summer Cup 2024.
